Billy Taylor was such an articulate spokesman for jazz, and his profiles on CBS' Sunday Morning television program where he was a regular beginning in were so successful at introducing jazz to a wider audience, that sometimes one could forget what a talented pianist he was for over half a century.
While not an innovator, Taylor was flexible enough to play swing, bop, and more advanced styles while always retaining his own musical personality. Inhe was the house pianist at Birdland and soon afterward Taylor formed his first of many trios. He helped found the Jazzmobile in ; in he became the first black band director for a network television series The David Frost Show ; in he earned his doctorate at the University of Massachusetts; and he both founded and served as director for the popular radio program Jazz Its A Grand Night For Swinging - The Billy Taylor Trio* - A Touch Of Taylor.

Inhe established Jazzmobile in New York City as a way to promote jazz through educational programs. Taylor hosted two long-running jazz programs on National Public Radio. Jazz Alive! The former program won the Peabody Award. Inafter being profiled by CBS News Sunday MorningTaylor was hired as an on-air correspondent and then conducted more than interviews with musicians. He received an Emmy Award for his segment on the multi-talented Quincy Jones. InTaylor formed his own "Taylor Made" record label to document his own music.
Then came Soloand Jazzmobile Allstars Taylor suffered from a stroke, which affected his right hand, but he continued to perform almost until his death.
